“ALL OUR CHILDREN UNITED” MURAL PROJECT APPROVED
Marin County and CalTrans have approved the installation of a painted mural on the south wall of the pedestrian and vehicle tunnel connecting Marin City and Sausalito. The work will take place in October.
Raylene Gorum, an award-winning installation artist who lives in Sausalito, was chosen by the “All Our Children United” volunteer steering committee for her design of a “sunrise to sunset” mural that will stretch from one end of the tunnel to the other and be covered with the artist’s painted handprints to represent the spirit of the children of the two communities.
Gorum explains that the first step is a power wash of the wall and the sidewalk, after which the entire wall will be painted a neutral background color. Then the mural will painted. The last phase of work is the application of multiple layers of anti-graffiti coating. The project should be completed by mid-November.
“We are excited and deeply grateful for the support of the County and CalTrans to bring beauty and positive associations to what has been an eyesore and somewhat scary place for far too long,” Susan Shea, a member of the five-person, all volunteer Steering Committee, said. “The budget for this project has been raised from generous private sources, including the Marin Community Foundation, and supported by grants from the County Community Services Fund and the City of Sausalito.”
